Description of the loop

A tour to discover the Pays des Abbayes in all its diversity : the history of the abbeys of Etival, Moyenmoutier and Senones, the Principality of Salm, the memory of the wars, in the heart of the Vosges Massif as we imagine it : mountains, rivers and fir trees. The departure is from the media library in Etival, an opportunity to admire the Romanesque abbey and its garden. You will then walk along the famous Clairefontaine paper mill, founded in 1858, before walking along the greenway of the Rabodeau valley, an old converted railway line. The imposing abbey of Moyenmoutier and its French garden stand on your left, so take the opportunity to observe its cathedral-like dimensions and its baroque architecture. Then discover the historic centre of Senones, cradle of the principality of Salm, seat of the 3rd abbey of your journey. A short climb (about 150m) will take you to Denipaire, where you can enjoy the beautiful view of the mid-mountain valleys. About 3km away is La Fontenelle, a national 14-18 necropolis, with its paths and historical explanations. You will then reach the small typical villages of Hurbache, then Holland, before returning to Etival.
